The Delftenaar is internationally renowned because of their unmatched drinking abilities. This is a result of a combination of male competitiveness and unlimited enthusiasm. The Shotgun is one of the sweetest fruits picked from this Titian tree. The Delftenaar was plagued, however, by the many theories and myths surrounding this activity. Some of these theories lead to loss of efficiency and as such to a blot on the reputation of the Delft drinkers. To once again elevate the efficiency of Delft drinking to superhuman Hooghtes, we have decided to bundle our knowledge on this topic and to support the theory with scientific models and empirical research. With this, we want to pass our knowledge on to a new generation, such that their drinking level can excel at an early stage. In this dictation, all known actions surrounding “The Shotgun” shall be presented and fact will be separated from fiction. To start, the base will be treated, followed by a deeper treatment of the more advanced techniques with which the Shotgun becomes the pearl on the velvet cushion of the Delft drinking culture.

“A Shotgun”, “Shotgunning”, or “pulling a Shotgun” refer to the act of drinking half a liter of beer from a can in a specific manner. This chapter will explain the basic principles of this action.

Drinking half a liter of beer at Hoogh speeds is made possible by the Hoogh pressure with which the beer is poured into one's mouth ($P_i > P_0$). The manner in which this pressure is created is described by Formula 2.1, where $\rho$, $g$, $H$, and $y$ represent the density, gravitational force, Hooghte of the can, and length in vertical direction, respectively, and $P_0 = 101 kPa$. The pressure created by the beer as a function of Hooghte is visualized in Figure 2.1. The impact Hooghte has on the pressure is significant. You can see that the pressure on the bottom of a 50 cl can is more than twice as big as the pressure on the bottom of a 33 cl can. $$ P_i = \int_0^H \rho g y dy + P_0 $$ The Hooghe pressure allows the body to increase the flow velocity, making it possible to consume a larger amount of liquid in a single swallow. This allows the person in question to consume more beer in less time.
